The History and Background behind Giropay Casinos
Giropay is an internet payment system which is widely used in Germany. All the main German banks provide this service as part of their online banking provision. It enables German customers to make secure online payments for goods and services by making a direct transfer of funds from their own bank accounts.
It is widely accepted by most major online casinos, which use it to encourage loyalty from their German customers. It is always available for players to use to make deposits on Aspire powered casinos.
The company behind it was founded in 2005 by a co-operation agreement between the German Postbank (the equivalent of the UK’s National Girobank), and the financial companies Fiductia IT, Star Finanz and GAD. The new service itself was introduced in February 2006. It has grown rapidly, so that it is now the most widely used form of online payment in Germany. Today, over 85% of all German consumers have access to Giropay payments.
The service was a success right from the very beginning. Barely two years after its introduction, the service had achieved a total transaction value of over €100 million worth of purchases. By 2008, Giropay was responsible for over well over three million transactions, which were worth €185 million in that year alone.
The system works simply and smoothly. Customers select Giropay as a payment option on the checkout page of their chosen online merchant. They then select their own bank, at which point they are directed to their bank’s log in page. The customer then enters their own account number and PIN in order to authorise the transaction. Then precise mechanism is dependent on the actual bank and the service level provided.
The bank then authorises payment, deducting funds immediately from the customer’s account, and informs the merchant that payment has been authorised. At this point, the customer is re-directed back to the merchant’s page with a confirmation that the transaction has been successful.
In this sense, Giropay is just a little less smooth than other more recently introduced services such as Trustly. This innovative method allows payments to be made without actually leaving the merchant’s web pages at all, so even loyal German consumers may be persuaded to use this new Swedish import instead.
But in any case, the Giropay service is quick, simple and secure. Everything is fully encrypted and sent via secure web protocols. All the usual high security and data protection rules of online banking apply, as transactions are made directly through the customer’s own bank. No additional registration procedures are necessary. Plus, customers have the reassurance that none of their own personal banking details or information are shared with the participating online merchant at all.
The Giropay service can be accessed using any kind of internet enabled device, including Desktop PCs Macs, laptops tablets or mobile phones. An app is available to make smartphone payments even smoother.
Finally, as the service is backed by the main German Postbank, customers can use it safe in the knowledge that it is fully regulated by the relevant German government financial authorities.
